Terms of Service
1. What Margin is
Margin is an AI-assisted writing mentor for college and scholarship essays, built around real, specific feedback. It provides feedback, brainstorming assistance, and editing guidance. It does not write, generate, or submit content on your behalf, and it is not a substitute for legal, financial, medical, or mental health advice, or for a school counselor's guidance on admissions strategy.
2. Eligibility and accounts
Margin is intended for users 13 and older. A parent or guardian may purchase and manage an account on behalf of a student. Account holders are responsible for keeping login information secure.
3. Academic integrity
You are responsible for complying with your school's, program's, or scholarship provider's own policies on outside assistance. Margin is designed to give feedback and guidance, not to generate submittable content — but the responsibility for following any specific institution's rules on outside help remains yours. Margin's design and this commitment do not constitute a guarantee that use of Margin complies with every institution's individual policy.
Some schools or scholarship programs restrict or prohibit the use of AI-assisted tools. It is your responsibility to understand and comply with those requirements before using Margin.
4. Payment, season access, and refunds
Season access is billed as described on our Pricing page →. A completed feedback pass means a request that results in Margin generating a full set of essay feedback. Refunds are available within 7 days of purchase of a Season Pass, provided no more than 5 completed feedback passes have been generated, as described in full on the Pricing page.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to use Margin to generate content for someone other than yourself to submit as their own, to attempt to extract or misuse the underlying AI system, or to submit content that is unlawful, harassing, or intended to cause harm. Margin reserves the right to suspend accounts that violate these terms.
6. No guarantee of outcomes
Margin does not guarantee admission to any school, program, or scholarship, and does not guarantee any particular grade, evaluation, or outcome. Margin's role is limited to providing writing feedback and mentorship.
7. AI disclaimer
Margin uses AI-assisted software to generate writing feedback, together with rules, prompts, and oversight developed by Long Waves LLC. AI systems can make mistakes, misunderstand context, or produce inaccurate or incomplete feedback. You should use your own judgment when deciding whether to accept or reject any suggestion. Margin is intended to assist — not replace — your own judgment and decision-making.
8. Safety and content review
By using Margin, you acknowledge and agree to the process described in our Safety Statement →, including that certain content may be reviewed by a human for safety purposes, consistent with our Privacy Policy. Margin reserves the right to suspend or restrict access to the service if necessary to protect users, comply with the law, or maintain the integrity and security of the platform.
9. Intellectual property
You retain ownership of the content you submit to Margin. By submitting content, you grant Margin a limited, non-exclusive license to store, process, display, reproduce, and analyze that content solely as necessary to provide, maintain, secure, troubleshoot, and improve the service, in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
10. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
Margin is provided "as is" and "as available." While we work hard to provide thoughtful, accurate feedback, we cannot guarantee that the service will always be uninterrupted, error-free, or suitable for every purpose.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Margin disclaims all warranties not expressly stated in these Terms.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Margin will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from or related to your use of Margin.
Where the law allows limitation of liability, our total liability for any claim relating to the service will not exceed the amount you paid for Margin during the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot legally be limited under applicable law.
11. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, without regard to its conflict of law principles, except where consumer protection laws in your place of residence require otherwise. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts that have jurisdiction over the matter unless applicable law requires otherwise.
12. Entire agreement
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Safety Statement, constitute the entire agreement between you and Margin regarding your use of the service.
13. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full force and effect.
14. Waiver
Failure to enforce any provision of these Terms does not waive our right to enforce it later.
15. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as Margin evolves. Material changes will be communicated directly, and continued use of Margin after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
16. Contact
