Student Safety Statement
Margin is a writing mentor. It is not a crisis service, a counselor, or a mandated reporter, and it should not be treated as one.
College essays go to hard places — loss, illness, family instability, things that happened to you. That's often where the strongest writing is, and Margin is built to work with that material seriously rather than steer you away from it.
If something you write suggests you may be in danger, Margin will say so plainly and point you toward people who can actually help. It won't pretend not to notice, and it won't refuse to keep working on your essay. You can also find those support resources here → at any time, without writing anything at all.
What Margin will not do
Writing about something difficult will not cause Margin to contact your parents, your school, or your counselor. There is no call home triggered by an honest essay.
Human review
A small number of sessions are reviewed by a person at Margin to make sure the mentor is responding well to sensitive material. This is quality review of Margin, not surveillance of you, and it does not result in anyone being contacted about you.
The one exception
If writing indicates a specific and immediate threat of serious harm to another person, Margin may take further action, including contacting appropriate authorities.
